Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) Army Base is located 24 miles northeast of the city of Yuma between La Paz County and western Yuma County, in southwestern Arizona. This Army base is adjacent to the state border with California, and occupies over 1,300 square miles in the heart of the Sonora Desert, situated northwest from the base. Yuma proving ground has around 2,000 square miles of restricted airspace, that along with the surface of the installations, make it the largest military facility on Earth.

Yuma Proving Ground, as the name implies, is a military facility mainly used for testing purposes, conducting all types of tests on practically each weapon system utilized in ground combat. With over a half-million missiles and mortars fired within this facility every year. Yuma Proving Ground does not only evaluate and test munitions systems, but also serves as a training camp for troops coming for desert training. This ground also performs 200,000 miles vehicle driving testing, 4,000 air sorties and 36,000 parachute drops flown from its airfield annually.

History: Yuma Proving Ground was established in 1943, after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inaugurated the Yuma Test Branch, which included a segment of the General George Patton's California-Arizona Maneuver Area, with the main purpose being training soldiers that served in World War II.

Units: Support Detachment is the sole unit permanently assigned to Yuma Proving Ground, besides three tenant activities. Nonetheless, there are also many military units stopping temporarily here, since YPG is widely used as a training camp.
