Rock Island Arsenal Garrison is the largest government owned and managed garrison in the United States. Situated on a sprawling 946 acres island that is right in the middle of the Mississippi River in between Rock Island, Iowa and Davenport is Rock Island Arsenal Garrison. The area wherein the Rock Island Arsenal Army base is located was previously a riverboat region known as Quad Cities. The Arsenal has provisions for state of the art base operations for the following installations: safety, information management, crime prevention, security management, facilities management and several others. The Arsenal also takes the responsibility of maintaining the facilities of common resources and telecommunications. It also provides services for recreation, morale and welfare.

Base Population: The current population on base is approximately 5,606 civilians, 557 military personnel, and 6,167 in terms of total population.

Child Development Centers: There are three development centers for children on the base. These centers provide services for children of ages 6 week until they reach the age of 5 years.  For further information on the child development centers please contact: 309-782-2822.

There is also the Family Child Care facility that gives excellent childcare services for children in a homely environment. This family childcare facility takes the responsibility of providing services to children of ages 4 weeks until they reach the age of 12. Illinois, Iowa and Rock Island Arsenal all have family childcare centers.

As far as classroom education facilities are concerned, there is no available school on base. Most children who live on base attend Moline, Illinois School District. Children attend Franklin Elementary for elementary education, High school children are students of Moline High School, and middle school students attend Wilson Middle school.

Youth Programs: There is a single youth center existent on base that provides a variety of activities and facilities for youth.

Employment: The average household income of the region is estimated at an approximate $50,454. The unemployment rate in the area is at an approximate 7.1%. Earlier Quad Cities had a lot of vacancy in the manufacturing sector; as of now there is a noticeable expansion in the availability of jobs. These vacancies include jobs in the gaming sector, insurance sector and the hospitality sector. Among the leading employers are Arsenal Island, Genesis HealthCare, John Deere, and Trinity Health Care Systems.

Base Services:

The base services on post include the following:

1 financial institution (Rock Island Arsenal credit Union), 1 on-post commissary (contact: 309-782-4614), exchange system, and MWR Facilities (bowling, arts and crafts, fishing, camping and many other such fun and interesting recreational activities).

Medical Services:

Situated in Building number 110, in the basement, is the US Army Health Clinic. This clinic has the capacity and capability to take care of the well being and health of military personnel in the Arsenal. Retirees and dependents can also get a check up based on available time slots.


In the year 1809, an act of Congress reserved this island as a Federal military reservation. Dating back to the time of the Black Hawk War in 1832 to date this arsenal has played a major role in every war and conflict and has been of great importance. The National Register of Historic places labeled the arsenal as a historic place in the year of 1969, and also considered some of the original building of the arsenal as National Historic Landmarks.

There is only a limited number of on post housing accommodations on the arsenal. These include 34 enlisted homes and 2 UPH units designated for ranks E1 to E4, 13 Field Grade and Company Grade homes, and 5 homes for Generals and Senior Officers. So, for service personnel not belonging to any of the privileged posts, an option is to find accommodation off base.
