History

During World War II the base was a chemical weapons manufacturing facility, and German rocket scientists moved in as part of Operation Paperclip after the war. The team of German rocket scientists created ballistic missiles, moving on to larger designs after they completed the V-2 rocket. Their tests were carried out at White Sands Missile Range, so it wasn't uncommon for them to take flights to both locations.

The team moved on to work for the newly founded NASA after the United States Army was relieved of the majority of its ballistic missiles in favor of other weapons. After that, Redstone served as the United States primary site for space launch vehicle design, and that continued into the 1960s.

In 1962, the United States Army Missile Command was activated at Redstone Arsenal, taking over all personnel, facilities and project remaining in the AOMC. Two years later, on March 12, 1964, the Francis J. McMorrow Missile Laboritories were named after the US Army Missile Command's first commander, who died while he was still in command.

It wasn't until the People's Republic of China let off their first nuclear bomb in 1967 that the Sentinel System was born. The Army Ballistic Defense Agency formed in 1968 and took over Sentinel and other MICOM ballistic missile defense projects. The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command was born in 1974 when all ballistic missile defense efforts were consolidated into the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization.

The United States Army Aviation and Missile Command was created at Redstone Arsenal base in 1997, when the former Missile Command was combined with the Army Aviation and Troop Command.

Redstone Arsenal Now

Currently, the Redstone Arsenal base is home to the Redstone Test Center, the Missile and Space Intelligence Center, the Missle Defense Agency, the Tactical UAV Project Office and a few more operations. It is still the center of testing, development and doctrine for the United States Army's missile programs.
