Through the years of operation, the shipyard took additional roles that include housing war prisoners during the Spanish and American War. In World War I and II, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is in constant activity in repairing battle-damaged vessels and building new additions to the fleets that are to be used in the war. In World War II, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard gained the reputation of being the premier facility in construction and repairing submarines  and that tradition continues up to these days. Some of the recognizable and famous ships includes USS Washington that was built in 1814, USS Saratoga that was used in 1842 and USS Thresher that was built in 1960. Due to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure or BRAC, the shipyard was added to the list of the bases that are to be closed in 2008. However, through the efforts of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s employees, an SOS or Save Our Shipyard campaign was arranged in the hopes of changing the committee’s decision. On August 24th, 2005, the base was taken off the list.
