Portsmouth Naval Shipyard or Navy base is centrally located in about 50 miles from Portland, Maine, Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the four remaining naval bases in the country. The main task of the Portsmouth Navy Yard is to overhaul, repair and modernize the US Navy submarines.

History

In 1880, the Federal Government has established Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where it launched its first product the USS WASHINGTON. It is a 74-gun warship that is launched in 1815. During World War I, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has expanded its workforce for nearly 5,000. The shipyard is what everyone called the oldest continuously operating shipyard in the country. This explains the area’s long-standing tradition in shipbuilding. With the abundant supply of wood in the forest of New Hampshire and Maine, the Falkland was commissioned in 1690. It is considered as the first British warship that was built in the Thirteen Colonies. In World War II, over 70 submarines were constructed by the shipyard and hold the record of four (4) submarines being launched every day. This makes the Portsmouth Navy Yard the center for submarine development and design.

Portsmouth Naval Yard takes in over 297 acres of land that includes the main base and a family housing site that is off base in Kittery, Maine. Most of the buildings that are located at the Shipyard are now are in the historic district and almost 50 of its building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PNY or Portsmouth Navy Yard was the first government shipyard that was able to build a nuclear powered submarine. On August 27, 1957, the USS SWORDFISH was launched. After the launching, the shipyard goes on in building ten more of it. On September 25, 1971, USS SAND LANCE was commissioned and was the last of the submarines that were built by the Portsmouth craftsmen.

Units

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the host to approximately 200 naval enlisted personnel and naval officers with their family members. The Shipyard is the one that supports four submarine crews together with their family members. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is also the home of the Three Coast Guard Cutters. It also provides services to a wide retiree population. Portsmouth has an approximately 4500 civilian employees.

Housing

Portsmouth Navy Yard has privatized its family housing communities. There are some private entities such as Balfour Beatty Communities that have gained a partnership with the Nave. This company has assumed the responsibility of shouldering the entire Resident’s housing needs. Admiralty village is one of the properties that is available for E1-03 and is located in 1.5 miles from the Yard. There are also townhouses that are available in the Maine community that is located at the coastal side of the area. It offers two to four bedroom floor plans that range from 1,160 to 1,600 square feet.

There are also the Military Officers Quarters that are located on the base. The historic quarters are designated as O1+ homes that provide many breathtaking water views.  There are 29 residences that offer options for single family homes. Fourplex row homes, duplexes and two- story farmhouse. Anyone can choose the best property that suits them.
