The U.S. Naval Radio Station was activated in May 1955 in the Norfolk Area to serve as a receiving facility for naval activities. This unit functioned as a naval radio station for several years and until it officially became component activity of the Naval Communication Station Norfolk in September 1970. By the year 1975, the Naval Security Group Activity Northwest was established. This unit was re-designated multiple times until it got its current name.
