The Mechanicsburg Navy Base that is located in Hampden Township is considered to be one of the few military facilities that is run by the US Navy in Pennsylvania. The said Navy Base is currently under the command of James W. Smart. Since it is the most varied installations in the US Navy, its objectives change little over time while there is no certainty in its future. In 2005, the BRAC commission eyes the installation for closure; however it has managed to make the navy base active for years. Currently, the base has four functional areas that include the administrative, warehousing, housing and community facilities and open storage.

As early as 1940, the Navy had experience in dire need of inland supply depots due to Navy Yards and Depots that were overcrowding the coastal – that with the advent of the so-called “Five Ocean” Navy they encountered the great need for relief. But since the Mechanicsburg area is proximate to the Pennsylvania turnpike as well as to the railroad yards at Enola, it was chosen to be one of the five locations for the construction of new depots.
The Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg in Pennsylvania was established under the authorization from the passing of Public Law no. 353 on December 17, 1941, by the 77th Congress. And this was later commissioned on the 1st of October 1942.
Following the establishment of the Naval Supply Depot, the Ship’s parts Control Center or the SPCC was commissioned on July 16, 1945, under the provisions of an officer-in-charge that will serve as the tenet activity of the aforementioned depot. However in 1952, the SPCC has spun off the Naval Supply Deport, turning it into a full-fledged activity that will be under the supervision of its own Commanding Officer.
Another great change that was noted from the Mechanicsburg Navy Base is its merging with the Navy Ships Parts Control Center in July 1972 where a number of military and civilian employees were later transferred from the Navy Supply Deport – making the SPCC the largest activity ever established in Mechanicsburg.
By the 1990s, a lot of reorganization had happened where the SPCC was merged with the Aviation Support Office (ASO) in Philadelphia in order to form the Naval Inventory Control Point or the NAVICP.
The headquarters of the Naval Supply Systems Command or NAVSUP was then moved into the Mechanicsburg Navy base in July 1996 from its leased facilities in Crystal City, Virginia. With the moved that was brought to the base, it has managed to gain the status of a Supply Corps Rear Admiral of the upper half. And today, this headquarters activity is currently one of the tenants along with the two NAVSUP’s activities: NAVICP and FMSO.
The Mechanicsburg Navy Base currently serves 4300 individuals approximately. These people were assigned to 30 tenant activities or command posts. Among the many tenants of the Navy Base, the Naval Inventory Control Point Mechanicsburg was considered to be the largest with 1,300 existing personnel. This is followed by the Navy Supply Information Systems Activity that has 800 existing personnel and 300 personnel coming from the Naval Supply Systems Command headquarters.
The military housing in Mechanicsburg Navy Base is privatized. The housing units are managed by the Lincoln Military Housing that are consist of single family home units that were completed since 2012 in order to serve the Officers and the Enlisted Personnel. It has complete community amenities and allows bringing along maximum of two pets; either it’s a cat or dog. For off-base housing, interested personnel can look for housing units that is near the NSA Mechanicsburg.
