History

The land in which the base is situated today was actually occupied in the year 1918 by the concrete ship building coalition known by the name Emergency Fleet Corporation, under a company name of Pacific Marine Construction. However, when the First World War concluded, the company started to incur losses and the land was returned to San Diego City. The Navy had also been trying to establish a ship repair facility and gladly took the opportunity of acquiring the land.

It was in 1920 that the Emergency Fleet Corporation and the Navy negotiated for the transfer of the land improvements to the US Navy.  However, the Schofield Engineering Co., the coalition company had retained their option of purchasing the plant. A local board of shipping had also not granted the permission for further construction and also the Navy had not passed the appropriations bills yet for authorizing the funds. However, an appropriation bill of $750,000 was passed by the Congress in 1920, June.

The major units at the base include the Afloat Training Group Pacific (ATGPAC), the Amphibious Squadron 5 (COMPHIBRON 5). the Amphibious Squadron 1 (COMPHIBRON 1), the Amphibious Squadron  3(Comphibron Three), Base Operator, Amphibious Squadron 3 (Comphibron Three), the Branch Dental Clinic, Bldg 3230, Branch Medical Clinic, the Center For Personal And Professional Development Detachment San Diego (Dapma, CMEO, Bearings And CCC), the Center For Surface Combat System Detachment San Diego (CSCSD), the COMMANDER, DESTROYER SQUADRON 21, the Commander, Destroyer Squadron 23, the Construction Battalion Mobile Unit 303, the Expeditionary Strike Group 3, the Fleet Logistics Center San Diego, the LCS Classron, the N44 etc.

The base has the Military Housing Welcome Center provides with personalized services of housing for helping with long term as well as temporary condo, apartments and rentals.
