Captain Lowell H. Smith along with Sgt. William B. Whitefield made a survey of Nevada after the First World War. They were looking for good landing areas. During the 1930s, the base as named as the McCarran Field and the City of Las Vegas bought the base in 1941. The Las Vegas Army Airfield activated in the year 1942 and it is the same year in which the training started. The arrival of the very first B-17 Flying Fortress took place in the year 1942 as well which allowed more than six hundred students of gunnery and two hundred and fifteen co-pilots to train at the field.
