Captain Lowell H. Smith along with Sgt. William B. Whitefield made a survey of Nevada after the First World War. They were looking for good landing areas. During the 1930s, the base as named as the McCarran Field and the City of Las Vegas bought the base in 1941. The Las Vegas Army Airfield activated in the year 1942 and it is the same year in which the training started. The arrival of the very first B-17 Flying Fortress took place in the year 1942 as well which allowed more than six hundred students of gunnery and two hundred and fifteen co-pilots to train at the field.


The units of the base include the 53d Test and Evaluation Group, the Nevada Test and Training Range, the Maintenance/Munitions Officers School, the 57th Wing, the Air Expeditionary Force Battlelab, the Joint Unmanned Aircraft Systems Centre of Excellence, the 99th Air Base Wing and the 926th Group Air Force Rese57th Wing.


Family housing facilities for the military personnel are privatised on the base. It is maintained by the Nellis Family Housing which takes care of aspects such as constructing, managing and repairing the community. Not only can you rent or purchase housing within the local community, but also you may also live in the privatised housing facilities that are signed as a lease agreement for tenants with the Hunt Company.
