History

Naval Base Kitsap is one of the newest and modern installations in the United States. As only a handful of bases were established in the early years of the 21st century, the base can be considered as one of the largest and successful naval bases built in the country. This is due to the merging of the two United States Navy Installations: the Naval Station Bremerton and Naval Submarine Base Bangor. These two naval stations have created the 3rd of the largest Naval Base in the country. It is also the single largest naval installation that is located in the Northwest Navy Region.

As the Naval Base Kitsap is fairly new, there are no significant events that can be attached to the base. The history of it lies with the two former naval installation that comprises the now massive base. In 1942, the Naval Submarine Base Bangor was established. It is to counter the threat of the Japanese submarines in the Pacific. The base’s primary role is to be the shipping port of the armed forces and played a key role in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The base undertook a series of improvements and expansions right after its quick construction. This gained the base its permanent spot in 1945. During the conflicts between Korea and Vietnam, the base has transitioned more into support role where it serves as an ammunition depot that direct the shipments to the conflict zones.

The Naval Station Bremerton, on the other hand, has a lesser illustrious history, but a lot more colorful one, however. The area where the Naval Base Kitsap is located in the present day is where the Naval Station Bremerton was previously placed. This former station was subjected to many protests and break-ins. There was a group of protesters that has gained entrance in the area in 2009. This area was used as the storage for nuclear warheads. The group of protesters hanged banners that covered the area, wrote graffiti on the walls and destroyed property. However, all the protesters were quickly arrested the following day after the break in. it is also the very first naval installation that purchased an electric vehicle that earns its spot in the history as the first section in the Navy to move into the alternative energy.

Units

Naval Home Kitsap is the home of the several transitional and tenant units. This is due to their maintenance and repair facilities. The current units that are calling the base its home are changing frequently. Nonetheless, there are still multiple ships and units that are permanently stationed at the base. The Fleet Surface unit is stationed at the Naval Base Kitsap so as the following; USS Ohio, USS Georgia, USS Nevada, USS Kentucky, USS Alabama, USS John C. Stennis and USS Connecticut.

Housing

There are currently 2,206 units that are available and are located on the base. Sixty-six of the units are located at the other locations that approximately 3 to 35 miles away for either Bremerton or Bangor Bases.
