History

On June 9 of 1909, the then Secretary of the Navy George von L. Meyer has signed the General Order No. 27, that is to establish a school for marine engineering in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1912, General Order No. 233 was signed by Meyer to rename the school to Postgraduate Department of the United States Naval Academy. The order has given way to establish courses in ordnance and gunnery, radio telegraphy, naval construction, electrical engineering and the continued program in marine engineering.

During World War II, the chief of naval operations and commander-in-chief of Atlantic and Pacific fleets Fleet Admiral Ernest King have established a commission that reviews the role of the graduate school in the Navy. In 1945, the Congress has passed the legislation that makes the school fully accredited, degree-granted graduate Institution. After two years, the Congress has adopted the legislation and authorizes the purchase of an independent campus for the school.

The Old Hotel Del Monte in Monterey was chosen by the postwar review team to be the new home of the Postgraduate School. During the WWII, the facilities were leased by the Navy. First it was least for the pre-flight training school for the Electronics training Program. Negotiations were made with the Del Monte Properties Company that has led to the purchase of the 627 acres hotel for a staggering amount of $2.13 million.

By December of 1951, Postgraduate School has moved to Monterey. Today, the school provides over 40 programs of study that includes the highly regarded M.S and PhD programs in national security affairs, management, mechanical and astronautical engineering, systems engineering, space systems and satellite engineering, physics, oceanography meteorology and other disciplines. And all the programs are with emphasis on military application. The institution is the one responsible in helping thousands of aspirants to graduate. It is the institution that have turned lots of graduates into some of the most professional experts and finest in the US Navy.

Units

The majority of the faculty is civilians that are drawn from the broad and diverse background of an educational institution. They represent the prestigious group of scholars. Every class in Naval Postgraduate School are taught directly by a faculty member of whom over 99% have Ph.D. The major commands at the Naval Postgraduate Schools are Center of cryptology Detachment (CCD), Defense Language Institute/Presidio of Monterey (DLI/POM), Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Naval Medical Administration Unit (NMAU).

Housing

The Presidio of Monterey and Naval Post Graduate Historical Housing has 41 homes that are reserved for Essential and Key residents that are identified by command. There is also an enlisted single sailor dormitory that prioritizes the single sailors to reside at the dormitory. E-4 single sailors can seek command approval if they wish to reside off the installation. E-5 and above single sailors can decide to reside off the installation. The cost of the installation housing is high. This is due to the location as Monterey is a resort/high cost of living area.
