History

In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt have selected Bethesda, Maryland as the site for the construction of the new Naval medical center and the United States Congress have appropriated the funds that are needed for the acquisition of the land. The original Medical center at that time was composed of Naval Hospital and designed to hold 1, 200 beds. It also provides other medical facilities such as the Naval Dental School which is now known as the National Naval Dental Center and the Naval Medical Research Institute. At the end of the World War II in 1945, there are some temporary buildings added in order to be able to accommodate 2,464 wounded American marines and sailors. The Naval Medical Center is a massive Naval Hospital that is widely considered as the flagship of the Navy’s medical division. With its medical research center, it is where almost the entire Navy’s dental and medical research takes place.

In November of 1963, the U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s autopsy was performed at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. During the Dallas, Texas Motorcade with his wife Jacqueline, the Texas Governor John Connally and wife, Nellie, the president were shot. It was then when the controversy started as the autopsy was supposed to be done at the Parkland Memorial Hospital was the President was pronounced dead. However, it was the Secret Service’s decision to make the autopsy in the Washington D.C.

In August of 1960, an expansion project of $5.6 million was initiated. The project consists of two five-story wings that are attached to the east side of the main building. In the summer of 1963, the project was completed. Buildings 7 and 8 have provided space for 258 beds and became the replacement of the temporary ward building of World War II. The many new buildings that were built and construction replaced the temporary buildings that were built during the World War II in order to accommodate the many wounded casualties of the war.

The Facility has greatly contributed not only in providing excellent health care for the military personnel and to the world’s leaders but also provides a facility that supplies massive research availability. With the combination of the two of the best naval medical center in the country, it is expected to become a massive medical center that caters to the medical and research needs.
