The Mountain Home Air Force Base is situated in the plateau amidst two large ranges of mountains. The base is about fifty miles from the south-eastern part of Boise while about ninety miles from the north-Western parts of the Twin Falls in Idaho. The base is approximately three thousand feet above the sea level and it has the 366th Fighter Wing which is also regarded as the Gunfighters.

Base Population: There are about 31,733 active duty personnel living in the base along with 3,900 dependants that include spouses and children. Apart from that, there are also 10,000 retirees with 406 GS Civilians and 176 NAF Civilians.

City/Area Population: The population in Idaho is 1,612,136 and in Elmore it is about 26,170. The population in The City of Mountain Home is about 13,805.

Child Development Centres: There is one Centre at the base that provides with childcare for children between the age group of six weeks to six years. The CDC at the Mountain home provides with part day, full day as well as hourly care. The contact number is 208 828 2443.

Youth Programs: There is a single large Youth Centre at the Mountain Home AFB that provides with care for children between the age group of six to eighteen. The programs include sports tournaments, dance nights, arts and crafts and many more. The contact number is 208 828 2501.

Employment: The opportunities of employment in the area are quite limited. There is hardly a major industry located in the thirty mile radius of the site. Some of the major employers at the base apart from the air Force are McDonald's, Wal-Mart and Marathon Cheese Factory.

Base Services: The base services in the area include the Support Services Squadron that has facilities such as library, art and craft, gym, bowling, theatre, swimming, tennis, camping, fishing as well as a recreation centre. There is also a commissary at the base along with an exchange system and a shoppette. The Pioneer Federal Credit Union serves as the financial institution of the base.

Medical Services: medical services are provided by the 366th Medical Group. The centre supports the 366th Fighter Wing's combat capability as well as the community of the Mountain Home AFB. The group has a hospital with ten beds and they serve in several special areas. Services that cannot be handled by the group are refereed to other facilities through the system of aero medical evacuation.


It was in the year 1942 that the crew started to build the base and it was opened next year on August 7. Very soon after the opening of the base, training began in the field for the crews of the US Army during the World War II. The first unit that was assigned to the base was the 396th Bombardment Group and plan of the mission was training of the crews for B-17 Flying Fortress. However, the plans changed and the 396th was transferred to the Moses Lake AAF before B-17 could arrive. Instead of training the crows of B-17, the airmen of Mountain Home began with training the B-24 Liberator crews. The first group associated to the training was the 47th Bombardment Group that had its training at the Mountain Home from 1943 to 1944. Senator George McGovern who had been a pilot for the USAAF completed his second stage of his training for B-24 at this base.


The units at the base include the 366th Operations Group, the 428th Fighter Squadron, the 389th Fighter Squadron, the 391st Fighter Squadron, the 366th Maintenance Group, the 366th Mission Support Group and the 366th Medical Group etc.


There are about five hundred and sixty three units with four and two bedrooms. There are also about a hundred and forty three enlisted units that have three or four bedrooms. There are as many as eighty one Company Grade units for officers that has three as well as four bedrooms, twenty five field grade units with three bedrooms along with sixteen field grade units with four bedrooms.
