History

In the year 1929, when the Wichita Municipal Airport was created, McConnell’s history began. On the 15th of May 1953, the airport became Wichita Air Force Base. On the 12th of April 1954 the bases’ name was changed to McConnell Air Force Base in honor of the flying McConnell brothers, Edwin, Thomas and Fred. The three brothers were known and honored for their fame in World War 2. Whereas initially the base was conceptualized as a municipal civil aviation service provider, it always had an army connection, which was instrumental in the base transforming into a key AFB service base in the later years.
