To the East of Del Rio, 6 miles away, lies the army installation of Laughlin Air Force. It is almost 9 miles distant from the International Bridge situated in Coahuila, Mexico. The base is located 154 miles to the west of San Antonio on the U.S. Highway-90. The base is responsible for instructing and caters to provide undergraduate training for pilots, for the United States Air Force, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve and the Allied National Air forces applying the T-6a Texan II, T-1A Jayhawk Aircraft and T-38 Talon in order to extend active Airmen and also organize professional, brave regiment.

History

The Laughlin Air Force Base was established in 1947. Between 1947 and 1949, the base trained personnel in operations (night tactics), took part in practical demonstration of flying 1-26 Invader, firepower activities etc. The commandment was developed at Biggs Air Force Base in Texas. It was transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana (November 1948).
