History

In order to counter German mobile armored units during World War 2, tank destroyers were developed. A wide and open space was required for the tank destroyer testing which was available in abundance in Texas. AD Bruce was given the responsibility to organize a new Tank destroyer tactical and firing center and he chose Killeen Texas as the location for the new camp.

About 300 families had to move from their homes in order to make space for the camp. To make the move easier for the families the Army came to an agreement of letting the land be used for grazing and nominal grazing, this agreement still continues to date.

In mid August the camp was finally occupied with a great opening ceremony and named Fort Hood.
