Fort Gillem is a U.S. Army base located in Forest Park on the Candler Warehouse, southeastern edge of Atlanta, in Clayton County, Georgia. This 1,465-acre facility is part of the USAG Fort McPherson is an industrial and logistical support Army base serving as a satellite station to the U.S. Army Second Recruiting Brigade. History: Fort McPherson was established in 1886, but was formerly named "McPherson Barracks" after Major General James B. McPherson, killed during the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. This fort became a permanent US. Army installation in 1889 and shortly after Fort Gillem was incorporated into this fort, but under the former name of Atlanta Army Depot.
Fort Gillem was established formally in 1940 with the construction of the Atlanta Quartermaster Depot and the Atlanta Ordnance Depot, which were completed in 1942, but it was not until 1973 that this Army base was renamed Fort Gillem and made a sub- installation of Fort McPherson.
Fort Gillem was named to honor the memory of Lieutenant General Alvan C. Gillem Jr., whose military career spanned from 1910 to 1950 serving at Fort McPherson as commander of the Third Army.
