History

The United States Coast Guard Academy was founded in 1876. It is the only military academy of the United States Coast Guard. However, the United States Coast Guard Academy is the smallest of the five federal service academies of the United States. To become a member or student in the United States Coast Guard Academy, admission does not require any congressional nomination. The students are considered as officers- in- training and are called as cadets. The tuition and other expenses of the cadets are funded by the United States Coast Guard. However, once a cadet graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy, he or she is required to serve as an active duty in the United States Coast Guard for five years.

During the first few months after the establishment of the United States Coast Guard Academy, there is only one civilian instructor named as Professor Edwin Emery who taught astronomy, mathematics, English, international law, history, theoretical engineering and many more. On the other hand, Captain John Henriques serves as the superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy until 1883.

Since then, the United States Coast Guard Academy continuously improves and widens the courses and classes. Every year, an average of 250 students was accepted in the United States Coast Guard Academy. After the training and classes, the cadets are required to undergo physical training to build their morale and commitment in serving the United States Coast Guard.

Units

The cadets assigned in the United States Coast Guard Academy took several examinations and screening before admission. The cadets are required to finish the course and serve the United States Coast Guard upon graduation.

Housing

The United States Coast Guard Academy provides barracks or lodging facilities for the cadets. The management of the United States Coast Guard Academy ensures that each and every cadet is provided with basic needs and supplies.
