Introduction

Camp Mabry Army Base P.O.Box 5218 Austin,TX. 78763 is very unique combined forces installation hosting the Texas National Guard, Texas State Guard, Texas Air national Guard and is Headquarters to Joint Forces Texas Military Forces. It also houses tenet units of the US Army National Guard and the US Marine Corps, the Armory of the 36th Infantry Division and the 136th Regional Training Institute. There is also a ICAO Weather Station on Base. Located just 3 miles Northwest of downtown Austin, TX. Camp Mabry is on the National Registry of Historic Places and it is home to the Texas Military Forces Museum. The Camp dates back to the 1800's and is rich with history and is dear to the heart of many Texans. It has served a role for many different purposes through the years and the same is true today.

Youth Programs: The Base has a one mile running track and recreation field and makes it available for various civilian sponsored youth sporting events. The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry is very popular with children of the Personnel who serve here, as well as the General Public. They offer many youth oriented projects and programs. Employment: Few Civilians are employed on Base at Mabry, everyone here is assigned Military Personnel. However, Austin is a large Metropolitan City with opportunities available in most any field.

History

Originally Camp Mabry was literally just that, a Camp. Members of the Texas Volunteer Guard started meeting on this site in the early 1890's as a place to practice War Games, train and, parade for the citizens of Austin's entertainment. So fond of their Commander, Brigadier General Woodford H. Marby  Adjutant General for the State of Texas, the Guardsmen named the Camp in his honor in 1892. Babry is the third oldest continuously active Base in the State next to Fort Sam Houston and, Fort Bliss. Some of it's important historical contributions have been, the base served as a major mobilization staging area during the War with Spain in 1898. By 1915, it was serving as the United States arsenal and all military stores were moved there. In WWI, the Army built Barracks and Administration Buildings and used the Camp to train new Troops. An Engine Rebuilding facility was established here during the War also. Then when the Texas National Guard was called into service with the onset of WW2, Camp Mabry became Headquarters for the Texas Defense Guard and, all other State Militia. The base had served as a training location for the Texas Department of Public Safety and the famous Texas Rangers until 1953. It continued to grow is size and purpose and by the 1980's it contained  over 700,000 square feet of buildings. Today it is the Headquarters of the Combined Joint Forces and hosts a multitude of important Defense activities.

Units

The 36th Infantry Division, the 136th Regional Training institute, the Texas National Guard, the Texas Air Guard, the US Army National Guard Reserve and the US Marine Corps Reserve Units are stationed here at Camp Marby.

Housing

All assigned Military Personnel are provided with on Base Housing but, many with with families choose to live off Base in the surrounding communities. Qualified Visitors and Guests can also be accommodated in very nice Barracks Apartments equipped with privet baths, air conditioning, cable, and, room service.
