Camp Frank D. Merrill Army Base is located in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest near Historic Dahlonega, Ga. At #1 Camp Merrill, Dahlonega,Ga.30533. It is home of the US Army's 5th Ranger Training Battalion and their stated objective is to provide Logistical Support, Train, Mobilize, Deploy, Support, Sustain and Reconstitute Forces. Named for the famous Ranger General of WW2 in the Burma Campaign called Merrill's Marauders, this is where soldiers receive their mountain warfare training.

Base Population: Since this Base is a short term training camp and much smaller than most bases, students are housed in on-site camps and only a handful of permanent personnel are stationed here, which are Officers and Instructors mainly. Therefore, the  population fluctuates depending on the size of the current group in training.

Family Readiness Center: The base does offer a family readiness center; however, to learn more residents will need to call 706 864-3327 for more information regarding family and community services.

Employment: Camp Merrill is not open for civilian employment, however, Dahlonega and the surrounding area offers many opportunities in the tourism and recreational industry due to its growing popularity and historical significance.

Base Services: As this Base is is strictly for mountain training lasting just a few weeks, services usually associated with most Military Bases are not available at this location. The Ranger Community does participate though, in Dahlonega's local activities on the 4th. Of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and other Parades and special events.


The US Army decided the rugged North Georgia Mountains was the perfect location to train their elite 5th. Ranger Battalion in tough environment warfare and established Camp Merrill here in 1952. To this day, it still remains the premier location for specialized training of Ranger Cadets. At this location in 1994 a Museum was dedicated for Officers and Noncommissioned Officers of the Training Camp to house a fascinating collection of Ranger Memorabilia from 1952 to the present. With reservations it is open to the public.

The one and only Unit here is the training Cadets of the 5th. Army Ranger Battalion.

There is no housing available at this Camp. Trainees are assigned to barracks or into small unit camps and most of the permanent personnel live in the surrounding communities. For those who might be assigned here the town of Dahlonega is the closest option.
